TFG Webmaster
here... Thanks for visiting The Fighters Generation. To learn more about the history of this website (and fighting games),
read on. When I first started creating this website (25+ years ago), I
would soon come to learn that I wasn't the
only person with a deep passion for this genre. To me, and people like
me, Fighting Games are more than a just hobby, more than entertainment, and much more than... "just a game".
Those who were frequent to arcades in the 80s and early 90s, the time
when the rise of the fighting genre began in arcades globally, are the original Generation of fighting game players. The OGs. Those of us in
The
Fighters Generation
will never forget
the days when kids and adults filled the arcades to
near-maximum capacity, the better of
us hovering around the newest fighters — excitedly waiting to test out the
latest competition (and the best of us racking up crowd-pleasing win streaks). No other
gaming genre brought that level of hype, that crowd, or
made that kind of impact. It was a phenomenon. Fighting
games were responsible for breathing new life into the eventually-struggling arcade
scene
of the 90s and 2000s... the most iconic games of the genre keeping the arcade scene alive
and kicking for many years to come. Even though arcades have diminished over the years (especially
here in the USA), the fighting genre is still
very much alive today... thanks to the loyal fans and players around the world, and the dedicated creators &
developers of the timeless games & characters we've come to know and
love for so many years. Thanks to
our passion over the years, continuing on for decades... fighting games have become popular and "mainstream" once again.
Welcome back to the stage of history.

Since the arrival of
arcade fighting games in the late 80s / early 90s, the fighting genre has been
a leader and a prominent influence in the now billion dollar video game industry. There's no denying the
complex character designs
and gameplay elements within fighting games have inspired countless other franchises and genres out
there, exceeding well beyond video games. (Just look at all
the bad movies Hollywood cashed in on, and don't forget about the
dummies who blamed violent behavior on games like Mortal Kombat back in the
90s.) Whether 2D, 3D, realistic, or unrealistic fighting games... the history of
fighting games has made a momentous mark on video game history... and history
has repeated itself time and time again, year after year, decade after decade. Regardless what country you're from or what language you speak,
FightersGeneration.com
is your #1 resource to reminisce and reflect on the history, evolution, and beauty of
fighting games. TFG will also keep you up to date on the latest Fighting Game News!
WELCOME!

The
Fighters Generation website embraces the
ARTISTIC side of fighting games. This website was designed to showcase the most eye-pleasing aspects of fighting games, and when you look closer, hopefully you find yourself immersed in
everything the fighting genre has to offer. There's a lot to
unpack here. It's an individual journey, even. As a lover of video games and a casual pencil artist since I was a child, I've always been
inspired by character designs... in particular. If you're well-acquainted with the
best fighting games out there, there's no
doubt you'll find something very special about the characters, artwork, and visual designs. Not
just the visual artwork for the characters, but their
storylines, moveset inspirations, and beautiful in-game animation... all
becoming timeless and immortal. Let's face it, not everyone can appreciate what good "art" is these days. Contrary to what some
old-timers might say, fighting games are most definitely "works of art"... not only due to the intricate
game designs
themselves (and their brilliantly composed soundtracks), but literally the countless
number of traditional 2D artworks, 3D renders, and animations
that were created from scratch by amazingly talented illustrators and
animators.
All that said, TFG would like to credit the legendary master artists
who created some of the most inspiring video
game artwork of all time, inspiring a whole new generation of fighting game
players and fans for many years into the future. Just to name a few
of these artists: Bengus, Akiman, Shinkiro, Kinu Nishimura,
Edayan, Daigo Ikeno, Eiji Shiroi, Hiroaki, Dai-Chan, Takuji Kawano,
Falcoon, Nona
and Daisuke Ishiwatari. There are many more to discover! On that note, be to check out TFG's frequently updated
Artist Profiles
feature to learn more about these artists and the inspiration behind the fighting games we love. In case you
don't know, the original purpose of creating this website (in 1999-2000) was to
proudly and respectfully showcase the very underrated, but fan-beloved official artwork of fighting games. If it weren't for the
artists previously mentioned, this website would not be here. Whether
you're a 2D Artist, Animator, Game Developer, Pro Fighting Game Player,
Cosplayer, or simply a Fighting Game fan... This website was made for you!
The best fighting
games would not exist without ART. The 2D sprites and animation that
started it all in the late 80s / early 90s have evolved dramatically over the
years. If for some
reason you don't understand how "Fighting Games = Art," this website is designed to properly educate you.
Before mass marketing, YouTube, and other means of advertising games (like DLC)... ARTWORK was primarily used to market and promote fighting games. Top tier fighting
game IPs like Street
Fighter, TEKKEN, Soul Calibur, King of Fighters, Virtua Fighter,
Mortal Kombat, Samurai Shodown,
and countless others got their start by promoting their unique art styles and innovative in-game graphics. Before even playing the game, the revolutionary visuals of these titles were responsible for getting players
interested in (and eventually buying) these legendary games.

The Fighters Generation proudly hosts a plethora of official (and non-official) fighting game artwork and animated 2D
sprites. (The highest quality possible!) TFG
is the largest archive of its kind on the internet, and continues to
grow year after year. This website has been a dependable tool and reference for professional artists and aspiring artists, alike. A primary reason
this website came into form back in the early 2000s was to inspire the many artists around the world who love and appreciate fighting game art and character design.
If you're an artist, animator, or game developer who uses FightersGeneration.com for reference, or
inspiration... keep doing what you're doing! Your passion inspires me to make this website even better. (And I'd love to hear from you on social media! My DMs are always open on Twitter:
@Fighters_Gen.)
Also, shoutouts to the professional cosplayers who also use TFG
for reference when creating their costumes (and poses for their photos)! As you can see, TFG's media
galleries appeal to a wide variety of fighting game fans. However,
TFG
certainly doesn't stop at artwork and has evolved into other media. As the
TFG webmaster, I'm committed to bringing you the absolute best and most elaborate Fighting Game News, Reviews, Fun Facts, Videos, Streams, and more.
For years, I've been updating TFG's ever-evolving, world famous Character and
Fighting Game Profiles: complete with elaborate bios, storylines,
overviews, and the best Artwork + Animated GIFs. It's a ton of work and has taken incredible dedication over the past
25+ years... but I love doing it. When I can, I also love entertaining the TFG
audience via Fighters Generation's YouTube, streaming on Twitch,
and posting informative or interesting content on social media. Check
out TFG's social media links further down on this page.
Continuing on the subject of ART... many fighting game characters from
the worlds of TEKKEN, Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter and Soul
Calibur (for example) reference real-life fighting styles and MARTIAL
ARTS. Even some of the more "exaggerated" movements of
ultra-powerful or (some would say) "unrealistic" fighting game character designs
can pay homage to traditional
martial arts styles. Personally being involved in martial arts for 30 years (most of my life), I've
always deeply appreciated this aspect of fighting games. The "art of fighting"
is embedded in my blood and lifestyle. I even used to teach traditional martial arts for a living.
Even though I retired from teaching martial arts, it's still a part of my life. I've been studying the science of fighting for most of my life, so fighting games are more
"real"
to me than most people could imagine. Interestingly, I've met many other people who appreciate both fighting games and martial
arts just as much as I do... and it's always great to meet likeminded folks.
Whether you're a student of martial arts or not, there's so much to appreciate when it comes to the classic (and new) fighting game characters
who proudly portray the beauty, authenticity, tradition, and personality behind countless martial arts styles.

If you happen to be a fellow martial artist
who found your way here, that's awesome... and WELCOME. If you don't already know, you'll soon learn about the countless
tributes to martial arts represented in fighting games. In the long run, TFG
itself is a tribute to the diversity and timelessness of martial arts.
The "spirit" of fighting will always live here.
To be frank (I am Frank), if fighting games didn't contain vivid references to
authentic martial arts, I probably never would've become as interested or as passionate about fighting games in the first place (and this website
might not
exist). That's how important martial arts and martial arts-based characters are to me. Not only have fighting
games become more realistic, more technical, and contain many overtones of martial
arts & martial arts principles, but I believe fighting games are even good for your brain. A proper fighting game brings two people together in a unique head-to-head
battle that you simply can't get anywhere else (besides actually sparring or being in a real fight of
course)!
Just like in a real fight, a quality fighting game is the ultimate test
of mental concentration... requiring creativity, patience, sharp reaction time, precise decisions,
the correct prediction
of your opponent's mind & movements, and ultimately, pure
skill in order to be victorious (most of the time)! The "thinking game" involved in great fighting games
(especially TEKKEN) really does
mirror some of the same elements one would encounter in a real
fight. I personally believe being a martial artist for most of my life
also gives me
some sort of "edge" in playing fighting games, as it would for
any practiced fighter who has to "think fast" and make quick
reactions. I suppose over three decades of playing
nearly every fighting game in existence probably helps too. ;) Also worth
mentioning, are the many professional fighters and pro-wrestlers out
there who love fighting games for the very same reasons. You know who you are... Keep representin'.
In closing... I'd briefly like to point out that I didn't
create this website to make money. I created TFG purely out of passion for fighting
games, artwork, and characters I love. I've managed to keep it going all these years to ensure that the fighting genre never
fades away... and that the artwork, brilliance, and beauty of fighting
games is never
overlooked or under-appreciated. Back in the day, there was a
period of time when fighting
games weren't so abundant, and certainly weren't "front page"
news. There was a time when some "gamers" out actually said
things like "2D fighting games are dead,"...but my work on TFG
never wavered. There was also a time when many "gamers" out there were
actually said things like "3D
fighting games are dead," ...but TFG never wavered. I never became disimpassioned by
negativity or haters. Negative statements like those only further inspired me to
show how amazing fighting games are, and to make TFG the best fighting game
website
possible. The many thousands of dedicated competitive players, tournament organizers,
artists, commentators, and supporters around the world also
never wavered. Over the years, we've all contributed in making the fighting genre
the ongoing success that it is today. Let's keep it going. All that said, thank you for visiting and supporting
FightersGeneration.com.

Greetings! My name is Frank Joseph (AKA "Frank Yagami" or
"Mr. Yagami"). I'm the founder, creator and webmaster of The
Fighters Generation website, and
admin of TFG's social media profiles (@Fighters_Gen). Many people who visit TFG might not realize this
site is managed by one person. A passion project that
began around 1999-2000, created by a lifelong fighting game player... Welcome to my website, TFG. The humble beginnings
of this website began
as early 1996, when I began creation of a universal gaming website called
GameGen (Game Generation). In '98-'99, I began building TFG from scratch (during my final years of high
school, actually). There
was no AI, systematic algorithms, or social media influencing available to use
back then to help me create this vast "dream website" for
fighting game fans. Over the course of 25+ years, I put 10's of 1000's of hours into
creating and updating this website... because I love fighting games and wanted the world to
fully appreciate them.
I hope you all enjoy visiting and browsing
The Fighters Generation for many decades to come. If you'd like to support TFG
and the community, check out our Patreon.

As you could imagine, creating and maintaining TFG has required tens of
thousands of hours. My hours. It's been a "labor of love"... 30+ years of playing fighting games... and 25+ years working on this website. Through my lifelong passion and love of fighting
games and martial arts, I'm proud
to have kept this website and community going strong for as long as it has. In case you don't know, I write TFG's news articles, game reviews, character overviews, update
game & character profiles, and manage TFG's social media. In addition to
the time I invest into actually playing and competing in fighting games,
keeping all of this going is a ton of work for one person... (but 100% worth
it). I've met some incredible folks along the way, and if you're an old school TFG visitor or supporter,
or a friend, thank you. If you're new here: I'm excited to see your interest in the greatness of fighting games...
and I hope you find
Fighters Gen to be entertaining, helpful, and inspiring for many years to come. For FGC

Still reading? Okay. I'll tell you a bit more. I'm a very introverted person in real
life, but since you've come all this way... and seem to have a pretty good
attention span, I'll try to make your time
worthwhile and tell you a little bit more about myself and my unique
relationship / history with fighting games and martial arts. I'll start from the beginning, because I've been
playing video games ever since I could walk.
I began using a computer in 1986 (confirmed by my parents) when I was 3 years old.
Thanks to my dad being a hardcore "PC guy" back in the day, I was able
to play some of the very first fighting games on PC at an early age, including: Commodore & Amiga
versions of International Karate, Yie Ar Kung Fu,
and Barbarian (to name a few). My father also began Karate during his teenage years in the
70s. Just like with computers... his history in Karate and introducing me to
Bruce Lee movies heavily contributed to my interest in
martial arts as an 80s kid. Little did I know back then, I would
eventually train in martial arts for 30 years of my life (teaching for 20+) and
even meet my wife through martial arts.

To continue on this nostalgia trip... one of my favorite things to do as a
kid
was spend many hours at the thriving ARCADES of the 80s and 90s. Back in
the day, my parents would drive me to shopping malls... where I would spend
countless hours at arcades playing the most influential fighting games of the
time. This was an every-weekend kind of thing. I was even friends
with the arcade managers. I do miss the smell of mall arcades... it's a one-of-a-kind smell. It was inside those
dark, yet cozy arcades where I fell in
love with iconic games such as: Street Fighter 1, Street
Fighter 2, Final Fight, Samurai Shodown, Mortal Kombat,
Virtua Fighter, Tekken, Killer Instinct, and countless
more. As a little kid, I even had to stand on an upturned milk crate to properly reach the
controls (and manage to see the screen effectively. (That's why it was helpful
to be friends with the arcade managers.) ^_^ It was a proud
day for me when I was finally tall enough to stand at an arcade cabinet on my
own and play
until my legs were tired. Good times.
Even as a youngin'... I brought solid competition to my local arcades.
I always picked up the home ports of fighting games, so I had plenty of trained experience over many other arcade competitors. I didn't mess
around... I was given a certain number of quarters and had to make those
quarters last! Haha! It was always a proud moment for me when I could show my parents
that I still had
plenty of quarters / tokens left over when it was time to leave (more reason to
go back to the arcade). Also, I damn sure wasn't about to leave the arcade and
have to chase my parents
down to get more quarters (no cell phones back then). Young
players of today will never know this struggle. All this to say... I became known
at my local arcades to rack up impressive win streaks (especially for a kid in
the 90s, sending kids "two times my size" back to the token
machine. Many years later, I saw kids younger than me doing the exact same
thing... keeping the tradition alive. Seeing this continuously happen
over the years is a beautiful thing.

While some news anchors in the 90s claimed that the "video game obsession"
was an "unhealthy habit"... I was also doing Karate /
TaeKwonDo since the age of 7... which became another lifelong
passion of mine. Also worth noting, I had to be able to defend myself in case some bloke decided to pick a fight with me after I
whooped 'em in SF2 or X-Men vs. Street Fighter. When I was a kid, my dad would occasionally "silently watch" (in his words) from
a distance while I played fighting games at certain arcades. He told me he
was concerned a few times
when he began to notice some of these older kids were getting legit
pissed off after I
sent them back to the token machine for the 7th or 8th time. "Stop
taking their money, son!"
LOL. Man, the 90s were truly GREAT. "Losers" didn't get get to complain
on Twitter & Facebook... all they could do was put more quarters in
and attempt to get better so that they could enjoy that badass new fighting game
arcade cabinet that had a huge crowd around it, for longer. I miss those days.

Fighting
games always made me think. They taught me things. Fighting games were
never "one defined experience" like you'd get from a certain
type of RPG or Action / Adventure game. I learned early on that your enjoyment and fulfillment
of a fighting game is up to YOU. In a quality
fighting game, your own skill level, creativity, and choices is what can make the game either
fun, or not fun. Fighting games have only gotten
better with time, and this was in large part due to the ever-increasing level of
complexity, and support from the competitive Fighting Game Community
(FGC). Like many others, I never really took a break
from playing (contrary to what those beloved SNES / Genesis game manuals used to recommend).
I started playing fighting games at arcades and I never quit. My soul still burns, and
I'll always have a passion for fighting games. Other passions in life?
Traveling... good food... and most of all, spending time with my
beautiful wife and daughter. Thanks for
reading my content and sharing this nostalgia trip with me! Please

website through Patreon.
