Virtua Fighter Remix

REVIEWVirtua Fighter Remix is a port of the first installment of Virtua Fighter, originally released on the Sega Saturn. The title update introduced updated and enhanced new visuals and colorful new character artwork drawn by Katsuya Terada. The new cover artwork and in-game character portraits made a big improvement to the game's presentation, since the first Virtua Fighter didn't contain any 2D artwork at all. This artwork is also seen in Virtua Fighter 2's character selection screen, and featured in the manual for the Japanese 32X version of the game.

The overall graphics in Virtua Fighter Remix were improved over the original arcade version. Mainly, the engine features new texture mapping and upgraded character models (now with a higher polygon count). The stage textures and "colors" are also much more vibrant over the original. Other than the updated graphics, the game engine is the same as the arcade version.

Improved visuals... same solid gameplay.

FUN FACT:  In addition to the Sega Saturn release, Virtua Fighter Remix was also released in arcades on the ST-V (an arcade platform based on the Sega Saturn). Later in 1996, a PC version was released. The Windows version can run at a much higher resolution than the Saturn version and includes the option to use the textured Remix models or the original flat-shaded models.

You know you want to press that start button.

Top notch visuals that pushed the genre forward.

 Review based on Saturn version

Final Words: If you owned a Sega Saturn, Virtua Fighter Remix was obviously a must have... right? Considering the fact that it was basically a console exclusive, and also because the game was given out completely FREE by mail if you were a registered Saturn owner in the USA! Pretty cool fan service for back then. I remember playing this game a lot at my local game stores and Wal-Mart / Target (because I didn't own the game back then.)

Although VF Remix can definitely be considered a "good" console fighting game at the time, the actual game engine was nearly 2 years old by the time of its release... and even the visual upgrade  looked somewhat "dated" compared to the arcade or PC version of Virtua Fighter 2 (which I did own). The important part is... Remix was the best version of the original Virtua Fighter that players could own and play at home. It was a great demonstration of gaming technology at high fidelity!

In some ways, this console "remake" of sorts was a pretty innovative idea at the time. Remakes weren't something that happened very often back then, so this was an interesting title in theory... one that would inspire the likes of many other 2D and 3D fighting games in the future. In retrospect and in closing, the awesome character artwork drawn by Katsuya Terada really made this title stand out.
