ABOUT
The legendary fighting series makes its long-awaited Steam debut with Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O.! Based on Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown released on PlayStation 4 and Arcade in 2021, this Steam-exclusive upgrade boasts rollback netcode support, beautiful 4K graphics, and battle balance updates—including the return of previously removed character attacks from VF5's multitude of Japan-only arcade installments and updates.

Virtua Fighter 5 refined for a new era.

An evolution of Sega's 60th Anniversary project, the "definitive edition" of Virtua Fighter 5 features reworked graphics and other new console features, remade for a new generation of fighting game fans. Along with Sega AM2, Yakuza series developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio worked on this title in an effort to bring Virtua Fighter back to the limelight with the most playable and feature-rich Virtua Fighter game to date. The remastered visuals were achieved using the RGG Studio Dragon Engine.

The 4K visuals and rollback netcode are welcomed upgrades.

FEATURES:

The Ultimate Edition of this legendary game: Rollback Netcode support, gorgeous 4K visuals with updated high-res textures and more.

Who has the best Jeet Kune Do?

Unfortunately, like VF5: Ultimate Showdown, almost all of the character customizations are locked behind paid DLC. There is no in-game progression system to unlock customizations through playing the game. This is a major downside and decreases the single-player enjoyment of the game, especially because this was one of my favorite aspects of playing VF4: EVO and the original VF5 at home. Unlocking customizations also been a staple feature in 3D fighting games like TEKKEN and SoulCalibur over the past 15+ years... That said, users must purchase the "Legendary Pack" for $10 to access basic character outfits and customizations from older titles (and not all of them, btw).

The paid DLC skin packs carry over from VF5: Ultimate Showdown, including the  Retro "30th Anniversary" Skins, the Yakuza crossover skins, and TEKKEN 7 collaboration skins. In December 2021, Sega announced new DLC costumes and content for Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown based on RGG's ongoing Yakuza series. In March 2022, Sega announced a TEKKEN 7 collaboration for VF5: Ultimate Showdown adding TEKKEN 7-inspired character skins. In addition to making Virtua Fighter characters actually resemble those from TEKKEN 7, the TEKKEN collaboration content also includes "Round 1 - Fight" visuals and Lifebars based on TEKKEN 7's style.

BOTTOM LINE

First Impression:

Sega has been updating Virtua Fighter 5 since 2006. Think about that. It's crazy to think that Sega devs are still tinkering around in the engine, adding new balance tweaks, moves and animations. Indeed, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. is truly a different game from the VF5 released 19 years ago and the numerous updates along the way. That said, the character movesets are the biggest and deepest to date, and that's a good thing!

I'll be the first to say it's awesome to have a modern VF game on Steam with rollback netcode and 4K resolution. I remember playing the PC version of VF2 way back in the day. Good times. VF5 R.E.V.O.'s traditional 3D fighting roots and "slower" pace is an interesting contrast to the modern 3D powerhouse of eSports—TEKKEN 8— with it's lightning-quick and aggressive movement, not to mention flashy mechanics and super moves. 3D fighters are diverse, babeh!

I've been a Virtua Fighter fan since enjoying the very first one at 90s arcades... later falling in love with VF2. As you probably know by now, this game requires a crazy amount of practice and study to become even remotely "decent" at the game, and I wish I could dedicate more time to it. My plate is full right now!

While the 4K visuals and rollback netcode were an instant selling point for me... I was very disappointed to discover a severe lack of customization options after purchasing VF5: R.E.V.O. Instead, Sega is still charging for customizations and the DLC costumes carrying over from Ultimate Showdown. That's wack. All of these ancient customizations should simply come with the game for "free" at this point. At least with the price of admission. C'mon Sega.

Other than that, VF5: R.E.V.O. is most definitely the "definitive" Virtua Fighter experience for players new and old, with dynamic 3D gameplay, enhanced visuals, and impressive character moveset updates. Stay tuned for a full review when I find some time.
