K9999

BIO:

Following the death of Krizalid and the disappearance of K', NESTS decided to comb their research for errors. A violent and unstable man, K9999 became the "perfected" 9999th Kyo clone. His name is pronounced "K-four-9".

K9999's visual design and special moves are heavily based off of Tetsuo Shima from the 1988 animated film, Akira. To avoid legal action, SNK decided to can K9999 from the series following KOF 2002 and later replaced him with Nameless in The King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match. SNK has taken several measures to remove him from official media, including retconning the NESTS Chronicles Saga to remove K9999's role. K9999's final canon appearance was in the KOF 2003 storyline. Many years later in The King of Fighters XV, SNK introduced Krohnen who is based on K9999's design.

Unlike K' and Krizalid, K9999 was created ground-up as a clone from Kyo's DNA. He wields an enormous amount of power but has trouble controlling it.
The blue glove he wears helps him control his shapeshifting powers and keep them from going berserk. He has an intense hatred for K' and considers him his ultimate rival. K9999 fights with his polymorphic arm. His arm can transform into claws, blades of different sizes and shapes, and into a shotgun.

His main purpose in the KOF 2001 storyline is to dispatch the rogue creations that had escaped from NESTS's grasp. He apparently does not discover that he is a clone himself until after the destruction of the cartel.
K9999 became known to be an
psychotic and lonely young man... only Angel seems to get along with him. He gladly stabbed Foxy in the back on orders from Igniz, but had to flee when K' came to save Kula.

When I first saw this design in 2001, I thought SNK lost their marbles (but in a good way). ^o^ K9999 is a weird but cool repainted copy of Tetsuo from the legendary 1988 anime, Akira. Silly name and all, K9999 actually ended up being a pretty interesting, cool to watch, and fun KOF character in the series (in the very few games he appears in). If you check his animations page (below), you'll see some awesome and very underrated SNK spritework. SNK did a crazy good job with this dude's animations in 2001! His walk forward animation? THE SHIT. They also went and gave him the Tetsuo arm for his super. EDGY stuff for SNK in 2001!

Unfortunately, SNK decided to do away with this design in fear they might actually get sued by creators of Akira...  as they left him out of KOF2003, KOF XI, and all future installments. SNK eventually replaced him with "Nameless" in KOF2002: Unlimited Match, whom shares a very similar moveset. For that reason alone, K9999 is pretty memorable KOF character.
