The
King of Fighters: R-2
REVIEW:
The King of Fighters: R-2 is the sequel to KOF: R1 on NEOGEO Pocket Color. The new installment adds several new characters to R-1's original roster, including: Kasumi Todo, Saisyu Kusanagi, and Rugal Bernstein. KOF: R-2 also introduces new backgrounds
based on King of Fighters '98 and brings new and updated character theme songs.

Another unique 2D fighting game on the beautiful NEOGEO Pocket Color.
|
KOF: R-2's gameplay is simple and straight forward, with similar mechanics to recent arcade KOF installments. Now in color, the vibrant 2D sprites and backgrounds make a bigger statement this time around and show off what the NEOGEO Pocket Color can do. Like the prequel, the sound is a strong point with incredibly catchy 8-bit remixes of classic character themes that arcade KOF fans can immediately appreciate. KOF: R-1 also includes an obscure "Making
Mode" which
basically allows you to edit a KOF character's skills and rename them.

Backgrounds from KOF98!
|
Visually, KOF: R-2 looks much better than the prequel... most notably because it added "color"... which, as it turns out, is kind of a big deal. The cutesy, super-deformed art style is still as catchy and charming as ever, giving KOF: R-2 distinguishable
visuals unlike any other fighting game in recent memory. It's not for everyone, but it's nice to see a different visual take on a fighting game in this era.
For anyone who calls themselves an SNK or KOF fan, I'd say The King of Fighters: Round 2 is a must-play and pretty much a must-own for any owner of a NEOGEO Pocket Color.

Words: |
If you can handle the cuteness... KOF: R-2 is
a casual and fun handheld 2D fighting game than anyone can have fun with. The NGPC's fan-approved "clicky" D-pad makes performing classic
moves intuitive and incredibly satisfying. KOF: R-2 was easily one of the
best fighting games to release on the NEOGEO Pocket to date, until the epic SNK Vs. Capcom: Match
of the Millennium arrived later in 1999.
