ABOUT:
The King of Fighters '94 Re-Bout
is a remake of the first ever
installment to the KOF series, The
King of Fighters '94, commemorating
the 10th anniversary of the franchise. The remake features "upscaled and
smoothed out" high-res character sprites and new backgrounds. KOF '94: Re-bout
was released
only on PlayStation 2 in Japan on December 28, 2004. An Xbox port for North
America was actually planned and completed, but was mysteriously canceled on
March. 23rd, 2006.

sure is a lotta snow... you guys wanna come inside?
|
Clearly, KOF '94: Re-bout's main
draw is the all new "remastered"
high-def sprites, along with Team Edit, which the original didn't have. As you
can tell from the screenshots, character sprites appear much larger
and crisper onscreen than their late 1994 NeoGeo counterparts. However, the frame-counts have
remained the same, so characters animate essentially the same
as they do in the original game. Using both 2D and 3D elements, the new backgrounds feature some cool
graphical effects and several character cameos from other SNK games. KOF
'94: Re-bout on PS2 also includes Online Versus Mode and a new anime
intro.

Words: |
KOF '94: Re-bout is pretty much the "KOF version" of Super
Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. No doubt hardcore
fans of the original KOF '94 can really appreciate this title... even
though a ton of beloved KOF characters don't appear in '94.
(Iori anyone?). I think the ancient animation might outweigh the crispy new
character sprites, but nonetheless, the classic sprites look pretty cool redrawn and all.
Unless you had access to a Japanese PS2, you've probably never played this game
(me included). Thankfully, with a 2015 PSN re-release looming, fans who missed
out on KOF '94: Re-bout can finally digitally import (at the least) and
give it a go. However, as a "PS2 Classics" title, we most likely won't
get online mode... but you never know, I suppose.
