Final
Words: |
Street Fighter: 30th Anniversary Collection is a love letter to lifelong fans of Capcom's timeless fighting franchise. While it's heart is definitely in the right place, there are some
considerable flaws for serious players worth knowing about (so continue reading). On the
brighter side of things... the Interactive Timeline, Fun Facts, Music, and Art Galleries of SF:30th might make this package an immediate must-own for most
"casual" fighting game historians and enthusiasts.
No load times on game start, save states, and various graphical options are
excellent "quality of life" features. However, this collection doesn't come without flaws. For starters: A wonky button configuration screen and no online or practice mode for "most" of the featured games. For games that do have online and practice modes, they are
mostly functional and feel nearly
arcade-perfect to an extent — but the ROM versions are not the
highly-preferred ones among competitive players. For the nitpickers... there are some
fairly major inconsistencies and the ROMs definitely aren't the best ports available in terms of performance.
And sadly, in particular, the SFIII: 3rd Strike port in 30th
Anniversary Collection is definitely not as smooth or as solid as SFIII:
3rd Strike Online Edition. As one of the "standout" titles of
this compilation, that's bad news.
The first
Street Fighter:
Anniversary Collection on PS2 was a solid and memorable package for its time (in addition
to
Street Fighter Alpha: Anthology). As good as those package were, there was no online mode at all... so you needed to
have actual human friends over to enjoy it to the fullest. Those were the days
huh? In
case your local friends don't play anymore, SF:30th
at least lets you attempt to play some of the all-time best Street Fighter titles online with other
players from
the comfort of your own home. The 4-player battle lobbies are a nice touch and work pretty well.
However, the netcode is "not great"... and while it offers a "playable" experience
at times, there are currently better ways to play these games with smoother
online.
Street Fighter: 30th Anniversary Collection could and should offer
years of replayability, whether it's online and offline, with new and old friends. If you've enjoyed
The Fighters Generation website for historical value and nostalgia over the years... you should probably check out Street
Fighter: 30th Anniversary Collection for the same reason.
As a Street Fighter
fan since the very first arcade title, I'm personally happy that this package exists. If Capcom released an
update adding Practice and functional Online Modes to some games (or even adding
additional games), this package would be much better. There are indeed some disappointing aspects of this
collection, considering its potential... but 30th Anniversary Collection
is probably worth owning anyway for most Street Fighter fans or for
anyone interested in getting into the series.
